At the end of 2022, Joan Butts retired as Director of Education for the ABF. The ABF Executive has since decided to change and simplify the process of teacher accreditation. Essentially this means that the state bodies will once again have authority over criteria for accrediting teachers. It is proposed that more general guidelines be adopted for this process going forward.
There is a fundamental need to grow bridge and support bridge clubs. We hope all clubs and regional councils may share in the teaching of new players with enthusiasm, understanding and responsiveness. Teachers, clubs, as well as rural and regional councils of clubs, may now submit names to Bridge Victoria for accreditation. The most successful teachers have a passion for bridge and run enjoyable and
stimulating lessons.
We invite you to nominate or consider nominating teachers who meet some or all the following criteria:
- Demonstrated competence at teaching bridge over a sustained period of time with the ability to
create and sustain enthusiasm in their students. - They have developed, or use, a structured bridge teaching programme, to take students from
beginners through to intermediate players - They have experience teaching and/or have completed a train the teacher course
- Have had at least 12 months teaching with positive feedback from students
- Prepared to be part of the teaching community and share materials and ideas.

The applications will be reviewed by the Bridge Victoria Operating Committee. Once approved, they will have
their names added to the list of nationally recognised teachers on the ABF website. Those already accredited via
the former process will remain accredited. All accredited teachers will receive a personalised ABF Teacher
certificate. Please direct all nominations or enquiries in the first instance to me via my email address at
